Shared kitchens
Shared cooking oil: the question hidden behind tempura
A simple way to ask Japanese restaurant staff about shared fryers, utensils and preparation areas.
A vegetable item may be cooked in oil or with equipment also used for other foods. If cross-contact or religious preparation rules matter to you, ask about the fryer and utensils separately from the ingredient list.

Ingredients and preparation are different checks
An item can meet your ingredient list but still be prepared in a shared fryer, on a shared grill or with shared utensils.
Say what level of separation you need
Some diners accept shared equipment and others do not. State your own boundary so staff are not asked to guess.
A “cannot accommodate” answer is useful
A clear no lets you choose another dish or restaurant. The goal is informed communication, not pressuring the kitchen.
Japan Dining Card
Make shared-equipment needs explicit
Japan Dining Card includes selectable preparation conditions for supported dietary profiles. Always confirm the final answer directly with restaurant staff.
